Essay:

The Breif:

“Your task is to put yourself in the shoes of a designer in a leading edge innovation company. You will produce a conceptual design of a solution to an interaction-design problem that you will define. You are free to choose the problem and type of system you design as long as it meets the criteria in this document. At the very least it should be a technical solution to an identified problem. Some suggested ideas you can use as stated, or inspiration can be found as a separate document – or you can use your own idea subject to approval.

You may use any and all current and (realistically) projected technologies for the design of your system. Your outline design specification should provide an explanation of your chosen hardware and software technologies sufficient to show that you have a good understanding of their characteristics, benefits and limitations. Similarly, you should also demonstrate an understanding of the cognitive and ergonomic characteristics of the target users and show how your design takes account of them.”

Basically my first idea fopr this essay is going to be to go down the medical and emergency services route, paticularly the technology used within natural disasters.

My idea is to aid earthquake rescue teams with a handheld device no more than 30-40cm wide that uses thermal imaging technologys and also guided microphoe technology to quickly and efficiently find survivors under varying amounts of rubble and provide them with all the necessary information so they can rescue the survivor(s) safley.

This kind of information would consist of:

  • Body temperature – to see how critical the survivors state was i.e very low body temperature could be fatal.
  • Distance to source of temperature.
  • Noise level indicators.

The handheld device would need to be made of a hard durable material as it would be prone to scrapes and bumps alot in that kind of environment.

Sketches coming soon………..
